Every 15 minutes of every day, a motor vehicle crash in the United States kills a driver or a passenger. And every two hours, an unsuspecting pedestrian becomes a vehicle accident fatality statistic.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 33,808 American drivers, passengers, and pedestrians were killed in vehicle crashes in 2009 . . . and another 2.2 million people were injured.

Although fatalities were down nearly 10% overall from 2008, this was both good news and bad news. The good news:

  • Passenger car occupant deaths were at their lowest since NHTSA began gathering crash data in 1975, and declined for the seventh straight year.
  • Motorcycle deaths declined 16%, breaking an 11-year pattern of increase.
  • Fatalities among occupants of light trucks – a category that includes SUVs – were at their lowest level since 1997, dropping for four consecutive years.
  • Large truck occupant deaths declined 26%.

But here’s the bad news: Vehicle accidents still cause more deaths and injuries each year than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.

When a loved one is killed or you or a family member is injured in a vehicle accident, these numbers have human faces and human consequences. Beyond the physical carnage of death or serious injury, the emotional devastation of dealing with grief, or the financial devastation of medical expenses and extensive hospitalization, you have questions about how your life will go on. And even more questions about how you and your family can seek the justice you deserve.
